I spoke with a potential client recently who was concerned about hiring a photographer who was not local. I understand the desire to have the convenience of a local photographer. It seems to make sense. There are some aspects of the pre-wedding planning that would seem to require face-to-face correspondence. However, some of the most successful photography has been planned and accomplished with phone calls and e-mail.
The key is to for the client to make sure that they are very clear about what they want and expect. Likewise, the photographer must explain what's feasible and/or realistic. Accurate and realistic scheduling, always leaving room for the unexpected, is very important. Planning with the photographer is one among many opportunities for the bride-and-groom-to-be to practice their skills in negotiation and compromise. It's also a time for real honesty about what is the most important to each person. As the photographer, I can act as a sounding board. But my motivation is always to give you the best collection of photographs in the style and manner you desire. Believe it or not, all this can be accomplished long distance. It just takes time. That's what unlimited night-time minutes and 3-way calling are for. : )
